September is Mold Awareness Month

September’s allergies are all the rage, especially when the hacking, coughing and sneezing takes full effect! Mold likes water, so it can grow quickly! Unfortunately, our bodies do not like mold.

Aspergillus fumigatus is a very common mold in home environments and can take up residency in places that we may not realize: outside gutters, potted plants, window sills, pillows, carpets and even rugs!

Research has discovered that Vitamin D could be an effective prevention to a common mold allergy, Aspergillus fumigatus, one of the most prevalent fungal organisms inhaled by people. Vitamin D works to reduce the production of proteins that drive the allergic response, it also increased production of the proteins that promote the allergic tolerance. Meaning, Vitamin D may not only help treat mold allergy symptoms, it may help prevent the symptoms too!

Molds do not like essential oils! The most powerful oils that help fight against mold (and bacteria) are peppermint, rosemary, clove and cinnamon. At home, we use a combination of lavender and peppermint oil, spraying liberally on fabrics and pillows that cannot be washed regularly.
